Review: War of the Roses by Iris Morland

This a short prequel to the flower sisters series!

I feel although, whilst this prequel easily introduced the theme of the main series it felt extremely redundant. This was a book written with the intention of showing the readers the pre-romance between Dani and Jacob and whilst it did that it failed to grab my attention in the way that other prequels have. The minimal chapters in this book were a quick and delightful read but overall lacked substance and development to the characters for this to be a standalone book. I think this would have been far more substantial to the series if it had been introduced as a prologue for the Petal Plucker book (book one) rather than sold alone. Combining the two together would have made the most sense and allowed the characters to become identifiable without needing to read the entire series.

My main issue with this book other than the lack of development is that it simply fell short of my expectations. After reading other books in this series I had high hopes for what this teaser prequel could bring to the series but it simply did not deliver. The plot line felt forced and the so-called sexual tension between the character was dryer than eating a tablespoon of flour. I cannot bring myself to understand the author's intention in releasing this book on its own - especially given that the blurb for both this book and its follow on Petal Plucker are exactly the same. What was the point of this prequel? It adds nothing to the series and overall is a disappointing approach to introductory chapters.

Granted, I can express that it did (somewhat) pique my interest in reading the next book - but to go through the effort of them purchasing another book entirely when this one so blatantly revealed the plot it becomes entirely predictable. I can guarantee that the follow on book will be an enemies-to-lovers romance where Dani fails to trust Jacob due to past grievances and trauma. And for the love of all things sexy can we please stop writing innocent virginal characters for the sake of a trope without actually writing them with personality or any other character trait that does not solely rely on their lack of sexual appetite?

In short, a quick read if you feel like not investing too much time getting to know a character or even beginning to enjoy their company as you read this one is for you. It embodies a perfect depiction of mind-numbing entertainment designed purely to pass time. Three stars may be a hopeful rating but at least it provided a mild amount of enjoyment whilst I did read it. But don't have high hopes for the plot of this book going anywhere without needing to divulge your bank details to continue the story. If you're looking for a prequel or inter-series book that is well-written and adds to the storyline of the initial series try reading the Calloway Sisters instead.
