Review: Skin, Bones, and Too Much Love by S L Gray

This was S L Gray's first publically released collection.

The image shows a hand holding up a book. In the background their is a pink quilt cover and a frosted effect glass bedframe. The book is skin, bones, and too much love by S L Gray and shows two hands (one skeleton and one whole) pulled together into a heart shape. In the centre of the heart are pink flowers.

I had been inspired on several occasions by the beauty of S L Gray's poetry on their Instagram account (@s.l._gray). It wasn't until I was scrolling through Amazon for new books to add to my TBR that I spotted their published collections! It was like an epiphany when I made the connection between the Instagram profile and the paperback waiting on my wishlist. I knew before I had even touched the pages that this collection was going to be emotive and relatable in so many ways.

The first part of this collection is based on the feelings associated with being in love. How that person is your everything and you would move heaven and Earth to stay by their side. I adored how these poems perfectly encapsulated how being in love feels. I believe even those who have never been in love with another could read these words and feel the emotions pouring out of each line.

The second part of this collection is based on longing. The feeling of torment that comes with a fresh break-up. It was this section in particular that I felt the most connected. The writing was raw and as a reader, you could feel the tension that was being created. Some of the poems exhibited in this section were ones that I had already fallen in love with on S L Gray's Instagram account. Seeing them on a physical page only heightened the love I feel for them.

The final part shows the process of moving on and letting go. It is the perfect section for those needing to re-learn to love themselves - something I believe loving another can make you forget. Out of all of the poems I read in this book the ones in this section were sweet and heartwarming. They were the ones I shared the most on my own Instagram as brilliant and worth every ounce of admiration.

The story told throughout this book is a beautiful tale of love, longing, and loss. Every word perfectly flows into the next and creates a series of emotions and rawness. As a whole this collection of poems is beautiful. The story that it tells is one that I know too well. It is one that most can relate to no matter who you have loved and lost.
