Self-care is something that I have grown attached to recently after following the That Girl trend on YouTube. My favourite YouTubers like Fernanda Ramirez, Elena Taber, and Batala's ASMR preach the concept of self-care with positive affirmations, staying hydrated, having a boss skincare routine, and in general living your best life. I spend free time at work listening to videos that encourage watchers to practice self-care to boost hair productivity or increase their health, and I can say from experience this never-ending hold of what you should and should not do can be overwhelming and certainly addictive. There are thousands of guides for how to live your best life and this one is a no-bullshit straight to the point source that is actually useful.

Simple self-care throws away all of the old rules and outlines how social media has warped the true meaning of self-care through consumerism and telling people that in order to become that version of yourself you must be willing to spend hundreds on certain face creams or a set of chakra crystals that were blessed by a Chinese Shaolin monk. Simple self-care goes back to the basics. The true routes of self-care and throws in a little history lesson on where this phrase originated.

I love how this book focuses on teaching its readers that true self-care does not mean an Instagram-worthy body or a wardrobe filled with designer clothing. It does not mean a lifestyle that others will envy or drinking litres of water with blueberries and lemon slices. Simple self-care tells us that it should be just that - simple. The author stresses that in order to really give yourself space and enjoy your life you shouldn't focus on how others are living their life instead you should focus on your hobbies and things that make you happy.

Simple self-care preaches that doing things you enjoy is self-care. Reading that book at 3 am, binging a Big Mac from Mcdonald's, or having a cheeky glass of wine with your pasta for lunch. Real self-care is about loving yourself and staying true to yourself. The fad of becoming That Girl won't last but the relationship you have with yourself will.

This book boosted me with some much needed positive energy. It gave me better insight into how I can become the best version of myself - without all the fuss and TikTok famous lifestyles.
