Review: Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur

Introducing young poets Rupi Kaur's groundbreaking first collection published in 2014

Dates read: 13/11/21 to 13/11/21

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Word to describe: Powerful

Genre: Poetry

Milk and Honey offers a collection for hurting and healing, loving and hating, and above all this collection gives the readers home for their broken hearts. Caring words teamed with beautiful illustrations are encased in a soft cover and ready to be read on all occasions.

I managed to finish this collection in a single day. I was hooked on this collection in an instant and reminded of other great poets that I have read recently. Similar to Pillow Thoughts by Courtney Peppernell this collection heavily relies upon presenting an emotional tale of heartbreak and survival. However, unlike other collections that I have read, some of these poems lack that emotional essence and feel dry.

With the majority of the poems resembling that of insta-poetry, in their short verses of two or three lines, this book is a very quick read. Some of the poems are represented more as mantras or short quotes for how to emotionally evolve rather than traditional poetry taught in schools - however, I am entirely new to this genre of books and I have fallen headfirst in love with this style of writing. The short sentences are far more inspiring than the long-winded stanzas some poetry has. They are thought-provoking and give insight into Rupi Kaur or her character inspired by this collection.

Despite the aforementioned, there are some longer poems within this collection. These poems offer such vivid imagery and have matching themes of sexual desire, identity, and relationships. These lengthier poems explore a larger range of topics and truly showcase this poet's ability to create imagery in the readers' minds through her writing. Rupi Kaur's writing style is so beautifully expressed in these longer verses that for a moment it is almost unbelievable that, as a reader, I was instantly lost in her words. Her talent is undisputed and I cannot wait to collect more of her writing.
