Dates read: 24/12/21 to 28/12/21

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Word to describe: Genius

Genre: Poetry

I was first introduced to Bo Burnham with his comedy specials. His gift for humour is exceptional and is the most genuine of all the comedians I have watched. So when I spotted this book in Waterstones it was a no-brainer purchase, I knew I would enjoy every minute. This poetry collection gave me exactly what I expected. It made me laugh, smile, and, of course, it made me cringe at the crude jokes. My thorough enjoyment of this book did not end on the last page - I shared this collection with friends and family and encouraged people to read a copy.

The type of humour Bo expresses in his writing is genius and almost seems random. His words are thrown together haphazardly to create a montage of shits and giggles - literally, one of the poems centers around a grandmother's extraordinary ability to expel putrid gas. The poems bring about those childlike immature humor and pair it with adult expressions and crudeness. The most perfect example of this would be his monologue-style verse I Fuck Sluts. Like a teenager saying his first curse word Bo Burnham spills out the words "slut" and "fuck" into every line creating a masterpiece of blasphemy where no other poet would dare to venture.

His work is unlike any other poetry I have read. It does not stem from heartbreak or trauma. It does not force the readers to overcome difficult emotions. The key goal with this collection is plain as day from the moment the first line is read. This collection is to make the reader genuinely laugh and forget about the world for a short moment. Without a doubt, it is a success. Playing on the silly and quirky, Bo Burnham has mastered the ability to turn weirdness into perfection.

There are few words I can conjure that will accurately describe the delight that is this collection. "Funny" barely touches upon this deliberate humour and "amazing" is simply not enough of a superlative. This collection was the highlight of my 2021 holiday period and I will celebrate my adoration of this book for many years.
