How can I accurately review a book that is written so brilliantly in the span of a few short paragraphs? At this moment in time words have failed me. The only way I can express my connection to this story is through a series of emojis and maybe a tear or two - although for the sake of genuineness I will try my best to pour all of the admiration for this story into a worthy review.
The characters in this book, Loren Hale and Lily Calloway, are both deeply fucked up characters. And that is saying it crudely. Words cannot truly describe the torment that these two characters endure at the hand of their addictions, the media, and those around them. When an unknown threat becomes known and endangers the secluded life Lily and Lo once knew they do what they do best.
Lily succumbs to her sex addiction and finds herself slipping into panic attacks and an unhealthy obsession with pornography on Tumblr. Previously, it became known to her closest family members that Lily's addiction has caused her to isolate herself from her friends and family. The eldest Calloway girl, Rose, was determined to help Lily and her battle with nymphomania (sorry Lily, I know you hate that word). This meant ongoing therapy and the destruction of any object or belonging that could spike sexual desire. Say goodbye to luxury dildos and a lifetime collection of vintage porn videos because they are now banned. This new threat not only pushes Lily to her limit in fear of her secret being exposed, but it also added a new sense of urgency for her sexual release. With friends checking up on her constantly, Lily's coping method becomes strained to a small list of to-do and not-to-do's gifted to longtime lover Lo.
Fresh out of rehabilitation, sober Loren Hale has nothing but time to mend his relationship with his estranged half-brother and put all of his energy into rehabilitating his sex addict girlfriend (soon-to-be fiance). This new threat was one that was both expected (since Lo and Lily are the children of self-made fortune 500 companies) and unexpected (in the sense that no one except close family and friends is even aware of their addictions). Of course, in an Alpha Male fashion Lo begins to hunt down former enemies and tells them to back the F-off and leave Lily alone. But shocker - it's not any of them.
In order to trigger a reaction out of low, this masked figure hides behind a screen and hurls insults at Lily's addiction - because if she's addicted to sex surely that must mean she's a cheap whore *insert eye roll reaction*.
This anonymous abuser is a classic case of oh no women! Having sex for pleasure! Oh my god, what a hoe. Clearly triggered by the upcoming onslaught of similar opinions that Lily is sure to be subject to. But, obviously, in true Calloway Sister fashion, the drama does not end there. Sprinkle in an overbearing abusive father, a strained relationship with a mother, and for some reason a giant house with Lily, Lo, Rose, and her boyfriend Conner all living together. A classic recipe for an upper-east-side disaster (just ask Gossip Girl). Sarcasm aside, this story is genuinely Gossip Girl-worthy, the drama, the fights, the crazy sex scenes, and, of course, lovable characters to last a lifetime, this book really does have it all. And, without spoiling the *plot twist* I can say for certain that no one will expect that turn of events.
