Review: A Curious History of Sex by Kate Lister

Yes, you read that right. This week we're all about sex.

A photo of a paperback copy of a Curious History of Sex by Kate Lister. The cover is bright yellow with pink text, and shows an image of a Victorian man giving a woman a vaginal examination. The background shows Courtney's (that's me the reviewer!) legs crossed.

Word to describe: Brilliant

Genre: Non-fiction

If you know me, then you know that I love sex. Thinking about it, doing it, talking about it, and educating others, even studying the ins and outs of it. Sex is a fascinating subject. It always had been from the ancient civilizations to modern-day the world has always loved sex. It is the most natural thing in this world (besides maybe breathing and death). Every animal has their own mating rituals (and some are freaky! Try researching dolphins), yet humans are the only species that still have a stigma around reproduction, sexuality, masturbation, and anything else to do with the motion of coitus.

A Curious History of Sex by Kate Lister offers a hilarious and unique take on human history and the obsession with rubbing genitals. Diving balls deep into history (pun intended), Kate Lister gives readers a masterpiece filled with innuendos, vulgar language, shocking facts, and above all the history erased from the public mind. The second I saw sex written in all capitals on this cover my inner teenager giggled and my inner adult swore in fascination. This book hit all the marks and there was no hesitation when I bought it.

Before reading this I, like many others, believed that modern-day society is filled with the most sexually liberated people with a lot of the world acting in their pleasures free from judgment. I truly believed that all societies before us were trapped in a life of monotony and sexual frustration due to the timeless classic that put a full stop on sex - the sacred virginity. Kate Lister proved my beliefs to be very wrong! In fact, I'm not even sure if modern-day humans are even in the top 10 of sexually liberated individuals. The shock-value of the facts given are sure to have other readers rethinking everything they thought they knew about the 1800s and the smell of lavender.

This book leaves no stone unturned and thoroughly discusses virginity, masturbation, prostitution, sex toys, abortion, religious beliefs, and a hell of a lot more. Each new chapter brings more facts to light and left me genuinely speechless. Not even three chapters into this masterpiece I had already encouraged fellow readers in the public Facebook group The Book Hangout Spot to grab their own copy, as well as four of my closest friends who immediately went to Amazon.

Reading non-fiction has never been as enjoyable as this one. Made for plenty of laughs and no-they-did-not moments A Curious History of Sex is surely one to share (the book that is! Don't be passing on those historical STDs). This book has certainly made a permanent spot on my bookshelf for many years to come.
